Time on Sex-Starved Wives;
But Do They Actually Exist?

Time talks about a phenomenon called "sex-starved wives." Sorry, but I just have a little trouble imagining they exist, except in the rarest of circumstances. Chalk it up to gender confusion, political correctness, journalistic contrarianism or something else. But it just doesn't conform to any reality most males have observed.

Well, I'm glad that you and the other men you know seem to have regular sex. It is true, however, that some men, well, don't want to. My husband is one of them, and I've done nearly everything I can think of to get him interested.

It's been nearly four months now. Even during "good" periods, I'll perhaps have sex once per month. In between, there is nothing. No snuggling, no kissing, no physical affection whatsoever.

The problem started slowly, as all problems do, nearly five years ago and has steadily gotten worse.

So, I'm glad to hear that this doesn't affect you, and I do hope that your wife -- if you have one -- feels as lucky as she actually is.

I feel your pain, anonymous, and I thank you for adding your insight. Several women have since pointed out to me that the problem cuts both ways, and affects both genders, if not precisely in equal measure, at least substantially on both sides of the gender divide. Here's hoping you find an answer soon.

By the way, I should stipulate that what I was trying to say--so let me make this explicit rather than implicit--is that most men want to have sex regularly, but that that desire isn't always met on their spouse's end. Of course, you zero in on one of the key issues--that women (generally speaking) value all the other forms of intimacy at least as much, and sometimes more, than the simple part called intercourse, while too many men tend to focus only on the latter. We have some learning to do on both sides.
