Wall Street Journal: Rest in Peace

We're in mourning here today about the imminent demise of a great American institution, now to be under the ownership of an unscrupulous, rampaging Australian billionaire. Our flags will hereby fly at half mast for at least the rest of the year. Today is a travel day, so no time to go into any detail (even if we could summon the mental energy to fight through our waves of nausea at the prospect of the onetime diary of the American dream being controlled by this person). But we'll take up the subject at length sometime soon.

Let's just wait and see. The Journal has had its Murdochian attributes probably for as long as the musty ole thing has been around. Not long ago, its editorial page was reincarnated as Fox News. Yet the journal is still known for its top-notch, non-partisan investigative reporting and almost always engaging front-page profiles. I guess it could all change, but I don't think you get to be a bazillionaire by making really dopey decisions, like sexing up (or mucking up) a great newspaper's identity. Unless you're willing to really implode the whole thing, and say, turn it into a New York Post clone. but again, that wouldn't make any sense. In some ways, if murdoch does try to infect the hearts and minds of journal staff with his political leanings and obsessions, things could get quite interesting at the journal...
